Abstract. The article provides an overview of the work of the scientific seminar “Social Movement in the Russian Empire: Participants, Structures, Ideas”, which was held on January 27, 2020 in Rostov-on-Don on the basis of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The seminar is the final in a series of scientific events held as part of the research project “National Suburbs in the Politics of the Russian Empire and Russian Public Thought”. The project has been implemented for three years with the financial support of the Russian Science Foundation by researchers from the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Southern Federal University. The seminar was also attended by scientists from the National Research University Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg State University and the Historical Park “Russia — My History” in Rostov-on-Don. The seminar addressed a wide range of problems related to the social movement in the Russian Empire, its participants and structures in the 19th–early 20th centuries. The scientific seminar was held in the format of two sessions, debates and discussion of the results and prospects of further development of the project.
