Abstract. After China’s defeat in the war with Japan in 1894–1895, the Far East became a recurring theme in the Russian press, both right-wing and liberal. In the early 80s–early 90s of the 19th century, the printing business in Russia developed considerably. By 1895 there were 185 printing houses in the capital alone. Newspapers began to play a leading role at this time, but this did not lead to the death of the thick magazine, the most popular type of periodicals during the 19th century. On the contrary, new socio-political monthly magazines with record circulation appeared. In thick magazines, designed for literate urban residents, well-known journalists and publicists of those years, often using pseudonyms, expressed their opinions on the widest range of issues – from literature, arts, science and technology, sports to the problems of historical development, domestic and foreign policy of the Russian Empire. Magazines were most often distributed by subscription both within the Empire and abroad. The relatively low subscription price of up to 10 rubles per year, as well as significant print runs contributed to the fact that this type of periodicals was influential and popular among readers. In this regard, it is interesting to trace how one of the most significant projects of the Russian Empire in the Far East – the Chinese Eastern Railway - was covered in the national press. In this publication, we will talk about the nationalist monthly “Russkoye Bogatstvo” (“Russian Wealth”).
