Abstract. The publication contains documents extracted from the archives of the RSO-Alania, revealing the directions of social policy towards military families in North Ossetia in 1941–1945. The analysis of materials makes it possible to determine the successes and shortcomings in this activity. The party-Soviet bodies were engaged not only in the payment of benefits, but also solved issues of providing or repairing housing; placing children of front-line soldiers in nurseries and recreation camps; opened canteens serving children from struggling families of combatants; supported war invalids by providing feasible work, providing material assistance, etc. Despite the undoubted successes in the social welfare of the families of front-line soldiers, a number of issues remained unresolved. This was partly due to the difficulties of wartime, but a negative role was played by bureaucratic red tape, which was an obstacle to successful work.
