Abstract. The article is a review of the II International Scientific and Practical Conference “Cossacks Guarding the Borders of the Fatherland”, dedicated to the 215th anniversary of the birth of Lieutenant General Yakov Petrovich Baklanov. The conference was held on June 6–8, 2024 in the capital of the Russian Cossacks — the city of Novocherkassk as part of implementation of the State Policy Strategy of the Russian Federation regarding the Russian Cossacks for 2021−2030, the Decree of the President of Russia “On approval of the Fundamentals of State Policy of the Russian Federation in the field of historical education.” The conference was organized by the Russian State Library, the Institute of History and International Relations of the Southern Federal University and the Platov South-Russian State Polytechnic University (NPI). The issues discussed cover the period from the 15th century to the present time and include current scientific and practical issues: the Russian Cossacks in the context of military activity and economic life; the role of the historical and cultural heritage of the Cossacks in the formation and development of Russian traditional spiritual and moral values; the importance of libraries in preserving historical truth, popularizing the history and culture of the Cossacks. The conference became a platform that brought together representatives of the scientific and educational community, culture, the Russian Orthodox Church, Cossack structures, including the Cossack youth movement, who perceive the historical and cultural heritage of the Russian Cossacks as a factor in strengthening traditional values and national sovereignty. The conference materials provide a more complete understanding of the political, economic and sociocultural life of the Cossacks, allow one to critically rethink theoretical and empirical problems, and analyze current methodological and methodological approaches to understanding the past and modern phenomenon of the Cossacks in the context of historical education.
