Abstract. The development of railway construction in the Russian Empire was accompanied by attempts to form a new social space in the regions, partly due to the needs of the railways themselves, and partly to the tasks of socio-cultural modernization of the country at the turn of the century. An important component of the social program on the country’s railways has been the development of the system of general and vocational education, including through measures to financially support students from the families of railway employees. In the presented article, based on materials from the funds of the State Archive of the Rostov region, the forms of social support for needy students on the Vladikavkaz railway are investigated, the effectiveness of organizational measures to expand access to education for children from families of employees is evaluated.
