Abstract. In October 2024, in St. Petersburg, within the framework of the St. Petersburg Historical Forum, a round table “Discovering the ancient world (on the 2000th anniversary of the death of Strabo, the Greek historian and geographer, 24)” was held. “Geography” is the most important source for the richness of the description of Eastern Europe, and not only its geography, but also its history.
The results of the interuniversity seminar on the translation and commentary of Strabo’s “Geography” were presented at the Round table. The seminar has been held at the IVKA of the Russian State University since 2011 under the leadership of L.I. Gratsianskaya and A.V. Podossinov. Seven of the regular seminar participants took part in the Round Table. The purpose of the work at the Strabo seminar is to collect fragments of “Geography” related to the history of Eastern Europe, publish their Greek text, focusing on the current state of the textual “Geography”, give a modern Russian translation and provide the publication with a detailed historical and philological commentary. The Round table, marking the anniversary of Strabo’s “Geography”, became a kind of presentation of the seminar on the study of Strabo’s work as a historical source, and allowed discussing the main problems and outlining prospects in the study of Strabo’s work.
