Abstract: In September 21–23, 2017, on the basis of Bunin Yelets State University with the support of the Russian Foundation for Basic Research (Department of Humanitarian and Social Sciences) and Lipetsk Region Administration the National conference “In the era of change: rebellion, insurrection and revolution in XVII – early XX centuries in a Russian province” has been held. The conference was attended by 40 researchers – doctors and candidates of sciences representing 14 regions. The reports of the conference participants were focused on social conflicts taking place in Russian province in the 17th – first quarter of the 20th century. The conference showed the urgency for development of a scientific direction as “riotry” in our time and allowed to enter a new stage in understanding social conflict in the history of Russia as an indicator of the political culture specifics, forms of behavior and social organization of a society. Within the framework of approbation of the conference results, two special issues of the journal “History: Facts and Symbols” and a separate collection of articles were published. The conference not only allowed Russian researchers to come together and exchange experience, but also to form new ideas, which together can be embodied in events of this kind.
