Abstract. The review presents the International scientific conference “The University in the Changing World” held in Rostov-on-Don (October, 13–15, 2015) during the 100th anniversary of Southern Federal University. The conference was organized by Southern Federal University and Institute of History and International Relations (SFedU).
Among guests there were not only representatives of the academic community in the Southern Russia, but also the scholars from other Russian regions, including Moscow (Institute of the World History of the RAS, Russian State University for the Humanities, National Research University – the Higher School of Economics), representatives of scientific communities of Saint-Petersburg, as well as federal universities (North Caucasus Federal University and Kazan Federal University); and foreign guests from Warsaw University, Institute of East-Central Europe in Lublin, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Institute for the History of Science (Polish Academy of Science), Universities of Zielona Gora, Vienna and Copenhagen. 80 reports were presented at the conference.
At the plenary meeting and during 11 conference workshops representatives of the university community discussed issues of history and traditions of the university education, perceptions of its core values, objectives and directions for further development, and benefits for society, nation and individuals.
The events devoted to the 100th anniversary of the University accompanied the conference. On the 13th of October the Museum of the SFedU history opened the exhibition called “A Phoenix from ashes. Warsaw destroyed and rebuilt (1939–1955)”. On the 15th of October conference guests were invited for the walking tour “University loci of the city centre” arranged by Undergraduates and Master students studying at the Institute of History and International Relations (SFedU).
