Abstract. The obituary is dedicated to the memory of the famous scientist, historian, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Republic of Armenia V.B. Barhoudaryan. The creative path and main achievements are traced. Practically all working and scientific life of the researcher was connected with one institution – the Institute of History of the Armenian Academy of Sciences, where he has traveled a long way from a junior researcher to the deputy director and head of the Institute’s department. The main direction of his scientific activity there was the history of Armenian diasporas around the world. During his scientific career, the researcher trained a number of students who successfully followed his work. The obituary notes that the main work of his scientific life was the fundamental volume “The History of the Armenian colony Novaya Nakhichevan. 1779–1917”, dedicated to the history of Don Armenians, which in general became the first scientific research on this topic. V.B. Barhoudaryan has frequently visited Rostovon- Don, personally knew some of local lore historians and maintained research contacts with them. The author, personally acquainted with the scientist, shares some memories of meetings with V.B. Barhoudaryan. The last work of the scientist was the monograph dedicated to the Armenian communities of Moscow and St. Petersburg. For scientific achievements, the scientist was awarded numerous awards in his country, was elected first as a corresponding member and then as a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia.
