Abstract. The article shows how, contrary to the established views, the Cossack family reacted to the upheavals of the Civil War. Referring to documents and personal field
research, the author shows that the reflection of the Civil War in the first works of fiction by Soviet writers, in particular by M.A. Sholokhov, unnecessarily dramatizes the relationship within the Cossack family. It is shown that conflicts within the Cossack family with fatal consequences, if they existed, were extremely rare.
