Abstract. This article is an overview of the Fifth All-Russian scientific conference with international participation “The Great Patriotic War in the History and Memory of the Peoples of Southern Russia: Events, Participants, Symbols”, held in Rostov-on-Don from May 30 to 31, 2024. It was attended by more 100 researchers from different regions of the Russian Federation, as well as Abkhazia, Belarus, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Serbia. The conference discussed a wide range of questions about the place and role of the Great Patriotic War in the fate of the peoples of Southern Russia, the specifics of the hostilities on the Don and Donbass in 1941–1945, analyzed the symbolic context of military events in the space of memory of Soviet and post-Soviet societies, depicted everyday life at the front and in the rear, and attention was paid to the crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices in the occupied territories.
