In memory of the Scientific Supervisor — Professor Anatoly Ivanovich Agafonov

Abstract. This essay is a memoir dedicated to Anatoly Ivanovich Agafonov, a remarkable scholar, one of the leading experts in the history of the Don region and the Don Cossacks of the 19th Century, and a professor and doctor of historical sciences. The essay focuses on Professor Agafonov’s work as a lecturer at the History Department of Rostov State University and a supervisor for postgraduate students. Attention is paid to A.I. Agafonov’s scientific contribution to the study of various problems of regional history, the history of the Don Cossacks, source studies, historiography, and special historical disciplines (genealogy, heraldry) and historical paintings. The essay also provides a description of Professor Agafonov’s major monographs.
