Abstract. The article is devoted to anniversary of Svetlana Smagina, Professor of the Department of the History of Political Affairs at the Institute of History and International Relations, Southern Federal University, Honored professional in Science and Education of the Russian Federation. The role of S.M. Smagina in studying history of the Russian emigration and political history of Russia of the early twentieth century is highlighted. The contribution of S.M. Smagina in training personnel of higher qualification is noted. Attention is drawn to the fact that since 1990s under her leadership 20 theses for PhD degree, including foreign candidates, were defended. She began her career as a teacher in the secondary school No. 80, Rostov-on-don, and then as a teacher of History and Social Basics in a college. It is noted that S.M. Smagina has moved from Postgraduate student entering Rostov State University in 1969 to Professor, the head of the Department. Under the leadership of Svetlana Smagina the Department was included in the Golden Fund of Russian science, and she was awarded the diploma «Golden chair of Russia”. The paper reveals the scientific and personal life journey of S.M. Smagina, sharing memories of the mentor.
