On the 80th Anniversary of the Great Patriotic War Beginning: Russian Scientific Conference on the Events of 1941–1945 in the South of Russia and Their Reflection in the Historical Memory

Abstract. The article presents an overview of the work of the Second Russian Scientific Conference “The Great Patriotic War in the history and memory of the peoples of the South of Russia: events, participants, symbols” (September 23–24, 2021). The conference was organized by the Southern Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Southern Federal University, the Humanitarian Foundation “Caucasus – New Horizons” and the Regional Research Foundation “Strana”. 142 researchers from scientific institutions, higher educational institutions, museums, archives, public organizations from 30 regions of the Russian Federation and from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Germany, Israel, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Abkhazia participated in the conference. Within the framework of the conference, a plenary and 4 sectional sessions, three round tables were held. The main attention was paid to the historiography and sources of study of the Great Patriotic War, the specifics of hostilities on the southern flank of the Soviet-German confrontation in 1941–1944, the contribution of the peoples of the south of the country to the Victory, the problems and consequences of the Nazi occupation, the daily life of the population, the economy, culture and education during the war, as well as the reflection of these issues in the memorial culture and memory of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia.
