Abstract. Book by O.V. Matveev is devoted to various aspects of the history and culture of the Kuban Cossacks. In this work the author shows and analyzes individual subjects of the history of the Cossacks, the fate of Cossack officers and common Cossacks, the historical heritage of the Kuban Cossacks, as well as folk historical ideas about the events of the past. Based on the approach of F. Braudel, O.V. Matveev aims to show the hidden harmony in the collision of space, human destinies and factors of the historical process. He also makes attempts to identify the process and mechanisms of the functioning of folk memory. Exploring the organization of the space of historical memory, O.V. Matveev focuses on the role of folk toponymy. Analyzing the dynamics of the development of the historical ideas of the Kuban Cossacks, the researcher dips into social imagology. The review concludes that conducting the analysis in the context of personal history, O.V. Matveev is rightfully guided by the fact that the main object of this is personal texts, and the subject is the history of life in all its uniqueness and completeness. It is noted that in the conclusion of the study, O.V. Matveev made conclusions that are significant both for the methodology of historical science and for the historiography of the history of the Cossacks and the Kuban.
