Abstract. Leonid Iosifovich Futoryansky (1928-2019) was well-known in Russia and abroad as a historian, a major specialist in the history of Cossacks, the history of civil war in the South Urals, the history of the Komsomol movement, the history of the Orenburg region as a whole. His scientific and pedagogical activity for more than forty years was connected with the Orenburg State Pedagogical Institute (university), where he rose from assistant to professor. L.I. Futoryansky was Dean of the Faculty of History and Philology, Vice-Rector for Research, Head of the Department of Soviet History (Russian History). Then he worked for more than ten years at the Orenburg State University, where he headed the Research Institute of the History of the Southern Urals and Cossacks of Russia. Leonid Iosifovich was the founder and head of two dissertation councils in the direction “Domestic history”, has prepared more than thirty doctors and candidates of historical sciences, was the author of more than 600 publications.
