Abstract. This article is devoted to Kazakova Lyudmila Mikhailovna, a Rostov archeologist, one of the most famous for researching Tanais and other archaeological sites of the Rostov region. Kazakova Lyudmila Mikhailovna graduated from the historical-philological faculty of the Rostov State University (1960). She was sent from 1960 to 1965 – as a researcher to the Azov local history Museum as its first archaeologist. In 1965– 1971 she was the head of the Nedvigovsky branch (the Museum-reservation “Tanais”), the Rostov regional Museum of local lore. At the end of 1971 she was invited for the contractual organization of the archaeological team at the History Department of the Rostov State University (later the archaeological laboratory). She was also the Head of the archaeological laboratory of the historical faculty of the Rostov state University in 1971–2008. Since 2008 she became a senior researcher at the archaeological Museum-reserve “Tanais”. She was the director of archaeological expeditions in areas of new constructions (Miusskaya irrigation system – 1974–1975, 1979, Don irrigation system in 1972, 1974, Martynov irrigation system – 1980) and in Rostov-on-Don (1972–1973, 1981, 1986, 2002– 2004). During the Don expedition of the Institute of Archeology of the Russian Academy of Science Kazakova was the head of operations in the excavation IV (1977–1995), and then in the settlement of Tanais. Actively engaged in social activities, she was Chairman of the Section of archeological monuments in the regional branch of the Russian society of protection of historical and cultural heritage (1967–1999), a member of the Expert Council for protection of historical and cultural heritage.
