Abstract. The article is dedicated to the anniversary of Anatoly Ivanovich Narezhny, Doctor of Science (History), Professor of the Institute of History and International Relations of the Southern Federal University. The article outlines the biographical milestones of the scientist’s professional life, reveals his contribution to the development of the scientific and educational life of the Rostov State, now the Southern Federal University, describes his personal and professional qualities that cause recognition and respect of colleagues far beyond the southern region of Russia. The organizational and managerial qualities of A.I. Narezhny as the first vice-rector of the Russian State University and the head of the department of Russian history at faculty of History, Russian State University (SFedU) in the 19th and early 20th centuries are highlighted. The article analyzes the invaluable contribution of A.I. Narezhny to the development of the scientific direction for the study of the history of Russian social thought in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The author of the article expresses gratitude to Natalya Valerievna Dmitrieva, executive secretary of journal “Novoe Proshloe / The New Past”, for her help in preparing the material.
