Post-Modern Interpretation of Cultural History in the New Play of Martin Macdonach “Very, Very, Very Dark Matter”

Abstract. The essay addresses a new play by internationally popular Irish playwright Martin McDonagh "A Very, Very, Very Dark Matter" (2018), which caused a controversial and even sharply negative reaction in his homeland. The aim of the essay is to analyze the play from the viewpoint of postcolonial discourse in its correspondence to the well-known cultural facts. This approach seems promising to reveal the main ideological intention of the playwright and demonstrate the peculiarities of his artistic method. Although the author of the article does not attribute this work to the highlights of McDonagh's creativity, it is impossible not to recognize the undoubtful importance of the problems raised and the originality of their artistic representation. The novelty of the article is determined by the material itself, not yet discussed in academic discourse, and its relevance – by the great interest in the works of Martin McDonagh as well as the importance of a new approach to historical facts.
