The Great Patriotic War in the History and Memory of the Peoples of the South of Russia: Summarizing the Scientific Discussions

Abstract. The article presents an overview of the work of the All-Russian scientific conference “The Great Patriotic War in the history and memory of the peoples of the South of Russia: events, participants, symbols (for the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War)”, which was held on September 10–11, 2020 in Rostov-on-Don on the basis of the Southern Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. A total of 134 people took part in the conference in various forms. The researchers represent scientific centers and institutes, higher and secondary educational institutions, museums and archives, as well as public organizations and movements. The geography of forum participants covers the states of near and far abroad (Germany, Latvia, Ukraine, Abkhazia), central regions of Russia (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladimir, etc.), southern regions of the country (Rostov, Volgograd regions, Stavropol and Krasnodar territories, Republics of Adygea, Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, etc.). The conference addressed a wide range of issues related to the events, participants and symbols of the Great Patriotic War of 1941– 1945 in the south of the RSFSR / USSR. Special attention was paid to historiography and sources of study of the Great Patriotic War, the specifics of the fighting on the southern flank of the Soviet-German confrontation in 1941–1944, the contribution of the peoples of the south of the country to the Victory.
