Abstract. The scientific school of the Rostov State University professor Aleksandr Pavlovich Pronshtein, began to form in the 70s of the XX century, when in 1972 he founded the Department of Source Studies of the USSR History in the RSU. It was the third such department in the country after the MSU and Kiev University. The object of its research was the issues of source study and its historiography, methodology and methods of historical research, special historical disciplines. In this direction was the research of A.P. Pronshtein. He brought up a group of students who continued and developed the school's research. They made up the second generation. In their writings some new areas of research appeared which were determined by the peculiarities of modern historical science. These include the hermeneutics of sources and the history of historical science, research in the field of auxiliary historical disciplines, and a comprehensive analysis of sources. In the writings of the third school generation, which has arisen since the beginning of the 21st century, the questions relating to the problems of historical memory and mass historical consciousness are raised. The study of the source study problems and the methodology of history continue: a considerable attention is paid to the scientific heritage of outstanding domestic historians, primarily A.S. Lappo-Danilevsky. Interdisciplinary links of the school and links with the centers of historical science in Russia and a number of foreign countries are developing.
