Abstract. This Obituary is dedicated to the memory of a prominent Soviet and Russian historian and orientalist Dmitry Yuryevich Arapov (1943–2015). He was one of the most famous researchers of the history of Islam in Russia. D.Yu. Arapov received a historical education at the History Department of Moscow State University. Research and teaching activities he also led in his alma mater. Both theses on oriental topics (1978, 2005) were defended in the Moscow State University. Dmitry Arapov is the author of over 100 works; among them a special place are taking the documentary collections. He was a brilliant teacher who was loved and respected by the students. Students of Professor Arapov now work in the academic institutions of Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don and other Russian cities.
