Abstract. The author considers new research directions of urban history in the framework of the interdisciplinary approach. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of history of provincial city in the context of «new local history». The relationship between the concepts of «city» and «urban space» are considered. The article deals ways of studying urban space in the categories of microhistory, semiotics, and imagology. The author dwelled on the characteristics of urban semiotic space, including such categories as «center», «urban fringe», their movement relative in the territorially-landscape and the historical contexts, as well as change of symbols in the displacement of the epochs. The example of Stavropol shows the evolution of urban space, beginning from the fortress of the Azov-Mozdok defensive line. The author demonstrates process of transformation of the urban center, which reflected the change of the historical time contexts. The semiotic urban space of Stavropol is analyzed and the main places of memory are presented. In general, this article forms a rich picture of the field of urban history, and outlines the prospects for studying the problem in the context of comparative source study and cross-disciplinary research. In this case, the attempts of urban scientists of different orientations are needed, because they can bring urban studies to a new research level.
