Abstract. The article analyzes the current situation of urban history in the scientific space of the South Russia. The research methodology of the article is based on the principles of synthesis of the historiographic analysis and socio-cultural anthropology that contribute to understanding historiography as a social scientific phenomenon of reproduction through the activities of scientists with different identity, the source of which serve as scientific schools and traditions and conceptual-theoretical orientation of the authors. The author comes to the conclusion that in the modern historical science of the South Russia three centers of urban history are developed: Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar and Makhachkala. Historians-urbanists of these three centers identify themself with a new direction. Rostov and Dagestan historians started the process of institutionalization of urban history through academic conferences and Rostov-on-Don also due to the implementation of the master’s program. The academic communities of North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Stavropol Krai and Volgograd also expand the research space. However, the regional development of the historical urban studies is still determined by traditional directions in historiography of the South Russia. Historians-urbanists need to be freed from the autonomous local and regional patterns, which can be done only in a conceptual update of the historiography.
